Horses for Adoption

Our job begins when a horse is surrendered or is found abandoned. The horse is taken to one of our foster homes, and is given immediate medical attention. He or she is housed by us and cared for until we deem the horse both physically and emotionally prepared for a permanent family. Once horses that we have rescued are fully physically and emotionally recovered, we offer them for adoption into suitable homes. NOTE: Although we do not have the resources to provide a retirement home situation for unwanted or elderly horses, we are happy to help owners toward successful placement of these animals.

To browse the horses that are ready for adoption, view the photos below, and click to see a large photo and more information for each horse. Due to our operating expenses, we cannot offer horses cost-free, but we try to offer a cost that is as low as possible; (usually between $350 - $1000) this varies depending upon the features of a given horse, such as the horse's breed, age, training, and soundness. Many horses come to us already trained in activities such as reining or trail riding. We spend a lot of time with each horse and try to assess each horse's abilities and temperament before offering him or her for adoption. Because we do not know the background of many of these animals we cannot make any guarantees and can only give you the best information we have. Many may need additional training with a professional trainer if the adoptive home does not have the ability to do so. This can add additional cost to a rescue horse, but will be well worth the investment in the long run.

Available Horses

Maverick is a 5 year old Mustang gelding dun, stands 14.2; non- rideable , companion only. This beautiful, majestic Mustang has been very patient while recuperating from a fractured elbow. It has been a long road for Maverick, but he's ready for a special, loving home where he can play with pasture mates and dazzle you with ground manners.

“Saedra” This beautiful mare is 10-12 years old and is around 15.2 hands. Morgan X, or something else? We don't know for sure but we do know that she will take your breath away. Sadly her story began before August 05 when she was saved from the kill buyer at an auction where her previous owner had taken her because she was “crippled”. Her front feet were so overgrown that she could barely walk. A friend from another horse rescue pleaded with the kill buyer to let her buy this mare with the kind although sad eyes. They started working on her feet and her spirit. Saedra had been neglected for so long that she no longer trusted people, and had probably been in pain for quite sometime.

MVHR acquired her in April of 07 and had x-rays done to see what shape the inside of her feet were. The x-rays showed that she had foundered at some point in the past. This could have happened due to the extreme overgrowth and neglect of her hoofs. Special shoes have made her sound and she is now being evaluated to see what training she has had. The vet believes that she will probably ware special shoes for about a year and that he sees no reason why she wouldn't live a comfortable normal life. “Saedra” has taken a great liking to people and greets everyone with a whinny. Trail riding or flat work will probably be best. With that shine we see her in the show ring!! Give this stunning girl a chance and she will steal your heart.

Hawkeye - This young gelding (aprox 5 years) is ready for the experienced rider / trainer.  Adopted out in the spring of 07 he proved a little too much horse for the adoptive parents and was returned to MVHR.  He has 60 days of training on him and is willing to learn.  "Hawk" needs a person with the time, patience, and experience to continue his schooling. At just under 15 hands he is a stocky strong boy who we believe would be a wonderful trail horse.  He has a great personality and gets along well with mares and geldings alike.  Meet him and you will fall in love........

Mia - This little mare (14h+-) is aprox 8 years old.  Giving birth to "Trixi" (already adopted) on April 13th, 2007 saved her and her filly from being sent to slaughter.  She was very underweight for being a new mom, but recovered quickly with quality hay, feed, and pasture.  She is ride able, and is still being evaluated to see all she knows. Mia seems quiet and safe, and  we think she would do well with a gentle child or small adult that can give her plenty of love and attention.

April - Although we also saved this mare from slaughter in the spring, she remained in Denver for the last 6 months fostering a little colt. She had given birth to an Overo Leathal White baby who died less than 14 hrs after birth, so it was only right to give her a second chance at being a mom with the orphaned colt. April did a fine job of raising him to weaning and we now have her back in our care.  At only around 4 years old she is very green and we do not believe she had been handled much if at all prior to giving birth.  She is coming along quickly and loves the attention and care she is getting every day.  April stands at 15+ and will continue to fill out and muscle up.  She is quite striking and could move forward in almost any discipline with the proper training.

Cheveyo

Cheveyo – 2 year old, QH gelding dun and still growing! Cheveyo has a lot of energy and has come a long way since being with MVHR. He's feeling like a horse again and kicking up his heels (which he never knew he could do) and is curious about everything.

Eve is a 3 year old, QH mare who stands 15hh and has been started under saddle. She has a great amount of potential, is strong, quite intelligent and willing to learn.

grady

Grady – 5 year old, QH gelding sorrel, stands 15.1hh. Grady has been well-started under saddle and shows great potential in any discipline. He's quick, attentive to the rider and has a beautiful extended trot. He's a little shy at first, but warms up to anyone who will scratch his hind end and withers. Grady enjoys goofing around with his pasture mates, but he's eager to have a job.

Kino

Kino - is a distinguished older gentleman (25+) who is recovering from near starvation.  This appaloosa had the will to to live and is now looking for that special home where he can enjoy the rest of his life with love and dignity. Although a companion horse, he will put a smile on your face and a song in your heart with his zest & zeal.

“Trixi” Born Friday April 13 th 2007. This lucky little filly's mom was headed for slaughter when she was born at the feedlot. MVHR responded to the plea for help and brought her and her mom into our care. “Trixi” is a healthy, sweet and sassy filly and should mature to over 15 hands. She will be weaned in late August or early September and be available for adoption at that time. Although very friendly she is also independent and would do best in an experienced home with someone who has the time to devote to working with this youngster.
